INTRODUCTORY POST: Digital Residents or Digital Visitors?

Welcome to my first blog post!

Let me begin with a question:

What are Digital Residents and Digital Visitors?

Digital Residents are the individuals that see the web as a place for socialising and sharing information and have a sense of belonging to the virtual environment.

Digital Visitors are the individuals who only use digital tools to achieve their tasks, goals and objectives, and do not seek visibility on social networks.

Who am I then?

Based on the result on my self-test, I see myself more towards the Digital Resident.

I have a strong sense of belonging to the online communities. Whether they are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram, WeChat or Whatsapp, I have an active account on each platform. This includes sharing photos, videos and other information about my daily lives on the social media platform.

Although having the social presence on multiple platforms, I manage my online privacy and security seriously.  This includes a restriction of revealing mobile number to the public and setting my account private so that I only share the platform with people that I know.

“If I do not know what this means or how this work, I’ll just Google.”

This is the mindset of myself, and I believe that many people nowadays also have the same thought. Due to globalisation and in this digital age, it has already become a habit of many people to rely on Google for the answer to everything.

However, searching for formal information such as accessing databases are my weakness. It is always a challenge for me to “dig” information out of the databases. This is definitely a point of learning for myself.

Hence, it is concluded that everyone is a Digital Resident or Digital Visitors to a certain extent.
